Summer Smoothie Recipes

The suns getting warmer and everyone is excited for the barbeque season but if you are trying to be healthy it can sometimes be very tempting to eat too many foods that aren’t really that good for you, instead why not ditch the ice creams and ice lollies, one thing in particular we all know is perfect for summer is fruit, yes you can eat it as it is but why not experiment and have some fun this summer trying out some of our delicious fruit smoothie recipes. It is the perfect way to enjoy the sun with friends and at the same time you can enjoy something that’s refreshing and tasty or even as a great energy boost on your way out the door in a morning.

You could even attempt to make an alcoholic smoothie, they’re perfect for summer parties and you’ll get all the benefits of the other healthy ingredients involved. The great thing about Smoothie are that you can make them in so many different flavours to try and combine it’ll take you a long while to get bored of them and they are packed full of vitamins and nutritional goodness for you to eat up while you try them all out!

One of the best things you can do is invest in a blender, (even if we lack in sun this summer as it usually does in England it will come in over winter making homemade soups!) get yourself into a routine of having a smoothie either for your breakfast or with your breakfast every morning because this has a number of benefits to your health. It is also a lot cheaper than buying them from the shops and you know exactly what has gone in it and how fresh the ingredients are so that the smoothie can be made exactly to your standard. If you give yourself 10-20 minutes every morning you will have time to cut or peel your ingredients and create your smoothie or if you are pushed for time prepare them the night before and keep them refrigerated. The great thing about this is that if you follow the following recipes you will get all your daily nutrients including your five fruit and vegetables a day all before lunch! What a great way to start your metabolism and give your body that refreshing, healthy boost first thing in a morning. The water and nutrient content will keep you feeling more energetic throughout the day and also helps to keep you feeling hydrated.

If you consume fruit and vegetables daily that are fresh and raw it will provide you will a wide range of vitamins, nutrients and antioxidants and if this is done daily over the space of a month you are likely to feel less lethargic. You are likely to have cleaner, smoother skin with a healthy glow and this also could lead to weight loss if consumed as a breakfast. Also the smoothies provide a lot of fibre which helps digestion and also could support weight loss. Due to the smoothies containing so many antioxidants and nutrients they will help support your immune system which will protect you from illness and disease which is great if you’re a busy parent or have a full time job and can’t afford to catch illnesses such as colds and flu over the winter.

Orange and Mango Smoothie

One of the tastiest and most refreshing smoothies is made by placing 3 oranges in the blender and one cup of mango and blending together for approximately 2 – 3 minutes. This recipe is full of vitamin C and is so simple and easy to make. Sometimes the most beneficial smoothies don’t always taste that nice but this one is absolutely delicious. When you have mango in your smoothie be sure to peel it and remove the stone from the centre, if it’s a warm day you can always add ice cubes to your smoothie to make it colder and more hydrating.

Hangover Cure Smoothie

One of the most popular smoothies that you can buy is the hangover smoothie, it contains asparagus, kale, carrots, garlic and milk thistle. This might not sound the tastiest smoothie but the ingredients are sure to cure that hangover and set you up for the day feeling refreshed. The reason this smoothie is so good for curing your hangover is because the asparagus contains a mix of different amino acids and these acids are known to help the live process the alcohol in your system and have been proven to help a hangover. The kale has high levels of potassium which helps balance the body’s electrolytes back to their original state whilst carrots provide antioxidants which support the liver cells so that they can function as best as possible. Garlic is usually the ingredient that puts people off drinking this smoothie but it has a great cleansing effect on your body and will help to flush all the badness from the alcohol out. Milk thistle is a usual ingredient but helps to maintain your blood sugar balance and also supports the liver. So ignore the taste and drink it down so that you aren’t spending the whole day feeling unwell.

Vitamin Packed Smoothie

One of the healthiest smoothies you can make contains the following ingredients;

  • Vanilla flavoured protein powder (1 heaped table spoon).
  • 2 cups of almond milk
  • 1 kiwi (with the skin)
  • 1 cup of frozen blueberries
  • Half a cup of grapes
  • 5 strawberries
  • 1 cup of raw spinach
  • 1 apple (with the skin on)
  • 4 ice cubes (if you have not used frozen blueberries you can use more ice cubes)

Blend all of the ingredients together until your desired consistency is achieved. The reason that this smoothie is so healthy is that it contains every basic vitamin and nutrient that is contained within a multi vitamin therefore this is ideal to have every morning. It is also full of fibre and antioxidants. Blueberries are also great for detoxing and they provide a chemical that aids weight loss.

You can also make smoothies for desserts by using milk, yoghurt or Greek yoghurt. Why not try a peanut butter and Greek yoghurt smoothie and add the ingredients to suit your taste. The great thing about creating these smoothies yourself is that you can change them to suit your specific taste and you can experiment and create your very own!
