If you have straight hair you can create more width with a full fringe. Fringes will cover up a particularly large forehead which will help to shorten the face.

Fine hair will defiantly appreciate some layers and look better in a short style. Layers will add volume to your hair which will also add width to your face.

Chin-length bobs and graduated cuts are also ideal for your face shape as they create the illusion of width and can be pulled off by almost any hair type.

Messy hairstyles or those beach waves looks will save you time when styling your hair and the loose waves will suit your face shape perfectly.

It’s up to you, your hair type and your lifestyle as to which hairstyle will look best on you, if you’re unsure on your hair type just consult your salon hairdresser before you get it cut and they will advise you as to which style is best for you.

Short Hairstyles for Oblong Shaped Faces

Hilary Swank

The first thing to remember is that the hairstyle should never add length to the oblong face. This means that extra long hairstyles, such as those that end beyond the shoulders, should be avoided.

Short hairstyles are the best suited for your face shape and will also make getting ready in the morning that much quicker.

Bobs and layers will look great on oblong faces. Bobs are better suited to you when short and graduated up the back rather then long bobs as they will add width to your face. Chin length bobs will also look great and highlight your jaw line showing off your bone structure.

However, not all short hairstyles will look good on the oblong face. Short hairstyles that add volume or height to the head, such as the pixie crop and the spiky hair, will only make your face look even look longer.

Just remember the short hairstyles that suit you are those that add volume to the sides of the face and you will look more balanced and feel fabulous.

Long Hairstyles for Oblong Shaped Faces

Gwyneth Paltrow

If at the moment your hair is longer then your shoulders then opt to go shorter so hair looks thicker and your face looks wider. Having hair that is just too long for your face shape will you drag you down even more.

Long hair for oblong faces isn’t a complete no no, if you do wish to keep your long hair make sure its adding width and volume in the right places. Height and volume at the top of your head will just add more length to your face, instead stick to a hairstyle involving loose waves or curls that add width to the side of your face.

A shoulder length straight hairstyle is the best length for long hair on an oblong face. If you have shoulder length straight hair, cut in long layers. Make sure the shortest layer hits you at your chin framing your face and showing off your bone structure at your jawline.

If you have fine hair then stay away from long hair all together it will do nothing for you unless you want to add extensions which would add fullness and volume to your hair. In my opinion though I wouldn’t go through the expense and would just opt for a shorter hair cut they will suit you much more and be less time consuming.

Curly Hairstyles for Oblong Shaped Faces

Janet Jackson

If you have naturally curly hair, then leave it alone!

Wavy hair and curly hair is perfect for a long face because it adds width to the face. If you have curly hair, don’t ruin it by trying to straighten those gorgeous curls out. Instead why not add some layers into your hair for more texture.

Waves and curls add softness and body to a long face. Keep on top of your length as you don’t want it growing longer then a couple of inches past your jaw or your style growing out.

Curly hair and waves will add width – just remember to avoid short layers that add volume on top and your curly hair teamed with your oblong face will be a style to die for.

Fringes for Oblong Shaped Faces

Niki Taylor

Fringes for oblong face shapes are usually a must have, especially if you have the larger sized forehead as most oblong faces do. If you have a small forehead then adding a fringe will just add length to the rest of your face to stay away from them.

Unfortunately not all fringes will look great on you however; in style at the moment is the thick blunt fringe which is perfect for you.

It will cover your large forehead and make you look super feminine as long as you wear it right. For example avoid blow drying your fringe under making it appear curled up and puffy. Instead wear it straight and skimming the eyes or brows which ever you prefer and you will look super sexy.

Styles Oblong Shaped Faces Should Avoid

Unlike all the models and celebrities, we unfortunately don’t have stylists to do our hairstyling for us each day and unless you have super thick with natural volume then you need to avoid trying out long styles like those seen on oblong faces celebs. Keep in mind the next few steps when it comes to what to avoid and your hair will suit your face shape so much more.

  • To much hair length will make your face will appear even longer
  • To little hair length will also make your face appear even longer
  • Too much volume at the top of your head will lengthen your face

If your not very experimental then stick to mid length hair with layers starting from your chin downwards to add width and add a fringe. You cannot go wrong.
